Stress Tests

A stress test, also called an exercise stress test, shows how your heart works during physical activity. Because exercise makes your heart pump harder and faster, an exercise stress test can reveal problems with blood flow within your heart. A stress test usually involves walking on a treadmill or riding a stationary bike while your heart rhythm, blood pressure and breathing are monitored. Or you'll receive a drug that mimics the effects of exercise. Your doctor may recommend a stress test if you have signs or symptoms of coronary artery disease or an abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia). A stress test can help: Guide treatment decisions Determine how well heart treatment is working Diagnose the severity of an existing heart condition

Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram uses sound waves to produce images of your heart. This common test allows your doctor to see your heart beating and pumping blood. Your doctor can use the images from an echocardiogram to identify heart disease. Depending on what information your doctor needs, you may have one of several types of echocardiograms.

Holter monitoring

The Holter monitor is a type of portable electrocardiogram (ECG). It records the electrical activity of the heart continuously over 24 hours or longer while you are away from the doctor's office. A standard or "resting" ECG is one of the simplest and fastest tests used to evaluate the heart.

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is accomplished with a special device that consists of a blood pressure cuff that is worn on your arm and is attached to a small recording device that you wear on your belt. 1 You wear the ABPM device for either 24 or 48 hours, and it records your blood pressure periodically (usually at 15-minute or 30-minute intervals) throughout that period, during your routine daily activities and while you are sleeping.

Cardiac Device Checkup

Pacemaker/Defibrillator/Loop recorder checks/interrogation This is done with the use of a computer called a programmer in the cardiologist's clinic. This provides information about how the device is working and about the heart rhythm by placing a special wand over your skin where the device is to allow for wireless communication between the device and the programmer does this. Your device can be programmed wirelessly. This check is painless and takes 5-10 minutes. Some people may be advised to have their pacemakers / defibrillators / loop monitors checked over the Internet with a special monitor at home (home monitoring).
